Parenting

Continuing the pregnancy and parenting is a real path. It can mean money, housing, school, or work. It also means ordinary care: prenatal visits, a ride, people who stay after the baby is born.

Independent pregnancy centers on Find a center near you often offer a medical-grade test and a limited ultrasound at their location. Some point to classes, clothes, and public programs. They are not one chain. Call the center before you drive. That number is theirs.

Adoption

Continuing the pregnancy and making an adoption plan is not the same as parenting, and it is not the same as abortion. It is a legal process. Grief can sit next to relief. That is ordinary.

Lifeline Children’s Services is in Birmingham, with a Huntsville office, and does pregnancy counseling and domestic adoption. Call 205-967-0811. That number is theirs. Other agencies exist; this list is only what is in the starter directory.

Abortion — what Alabama law allows

Alabama law makes it unlawful for any person to intentionally perform or attempt to perform an abortion except as the statute itself provides.

An abortion is permitted if an attending physician licensed in Alabama determines it is necessary to prevent a serious health risk to the unborn child’s mother. Except in a medical emergency, a second Alabama-licensed physician must confirm that in writing within 180 days. That is a physician determination — not something you decide from a website. The Act text does not list rape or incest as a permitted ground.

Abortion outside that serious-health-risk frame is not lawful in Alabama. That includes the abortion pill. Packs can still arrive in the mail. They are two drugs, not one. A mailbox cannot tell you if the pregnancy is in the uterus.

What the body still has to do

FDA-approved labeling for the mifepristone regimen is for medical termination of intrauterine pregnancy through 70 days gestation. The Medication Guide says it is not approved for ending pregnancies that are further along.

The approved regimen is not treatment for ectopic pregnancy. Pain and bleeding may resemble a ruptured ectopic. A ruptured ectopic can be fatal.

Medication abortion can fail. The pregnancy can continue.

Serious and sometimes fatal infections and bleeding occur very rarely. No causal relationship between mifepristone and misoprostol and those events has been established. Soak two thick pads an hour for two consecutive hours: that is an ER. If you are crashing before the second hour, do not wait.

In June 2026 the Alabama Attorney General issued a cease-and-desist letter stating that abortions are illegal in Alabama, including prescription of medicine, drugs, or devices with the intent defined in the Act, and that it is unlawful to ship abortion pills to an individual in Alabama for the purpose of terminating a pregnancy. That is an Attorney General demand letter, not a court judgment and not a new statute.

FDA’s mifepristone REMS does not make pills lawful in Alabama.
