Alabama law still makes it unlawful for any person to intentionally perform or attempt an abortion except as the statute itself provides. Leaving the state does not rewrite that in-state rule.

What actually costs

Time is the first cost that does not show on a quote. A shift in Decatur. A class at UA. A child who needs a sitter. Repeat visits are common. Plan for more than one day even if a website says one.

Money is next, and it is usually more than the procedure. Gas. A hotel. Food. A missed paycheck. People underestimate this because the first number they see is only the appointment.

Follow-up is the part that happens after you are home. FDA labeling says follow-up with a healthcare provider about 7 to 14 days after mifepristone is “very important” to confirm the pregnancy has ended and to evaluate bleeding. Lack of bleeding usually indicates failure. Prolonged or heavy bleeding is not proof of a complete abortion. If listed contacts cannot be reached, go to an emergency room.

Being alone sits under all of that. If bleeding starts at 2 a.m. in another state, who is with you. If it starts after you are back in Birmingham or Dothan, who does the aftercare. Chat on this site is not that room.

Serious and sometimes fatal infections and bleeding occur very rarely following spontaneous, surgical, and medical abortions. No causal relationship between the use of mifepristone and misoprostol and these events has been established. Prolonged heavy bleeding may be a sign of incomplete abortion. Soak two thick pads an hour for two consecutive hours: that is an ER. If you are crashing before the second hour, do not wait.

The approved regimen is not treatment for ectopic pregnancy. Expected abdominal pain and uterine bleeding may resemble a ruptured ectopic. A ruptured ectopic can be fatal. A mailed pack cannot tell you the pregnancy is in the uterus. An ultrasound can — find a pregnancy center near you for that check.

Incomplete care, delayed care, and no local follow-up doctor are the practical risks of leaving and coming back. Confirm a pregnancy, confirm it is in the uterus, and confirm how far along before anyone spends the gas.

On the FDA label’s U.S. trials, complete medical abortion was 97.4% and ongoing pregnancy 0.7%. About 2 to 7 out of 100 women taking Mifeprex will need a surgical procedure because the pregnancy did not completely pass or to stop bleeding. Those figures are label trials, not a promise about a clinic this page has not named. There is no in-state elective clinic to go back to if pills fail.

What a court has and has not said about helping someone leave

On March 31, 2025, the Middle District of Alabama entered a declaration (the March 31, 2025 opinion) that threatened prosecutions of those who assist people leaving Alabama to obtain a lawful out-of-state abortion violate the right to travel and the First Amendment. The court denied a permanent injunction. It denied the transportation expressive-conduct claim. On May 2, 2025, the plaintiffs notified the court that the appeal deadline had elapsed and that no appeal had been filed (Doc. 89). The docket terminated March 31, 2025.

That declaration is not a license for in-state abortion. It is not immunity for mailing pills into Alabama. This page does not write that Alabama cannot stop someone from getting an abortion.
